Old-money décor is all about timeless elegance, quality craftsmanship, subtle luxury, and items that look like they’ve been in the family awhile (or could have been). To help you create that perfect mix of elegance and timelessness I have put together a “room by room” checklist to inspire you whether you’re looking to focus on one room or do a complete house makeover.
But before we dive in in our room-by-room tour, here are a few keys principles to keep in mind:
- Quality over trend: Invest in pieces that are well made, that age well, and won’t go out of style.
- Understated elegance: Nothing overtly flashy; luxury shows in details, materials, proportion, and restraint.
- Heritage & history: Heirlooms, antiques, things with a story, or pieces that look like they could have one.
- Rich materials & textures: Natural woods, marble, silk, velvet, brocade, leather.
- Classic patterns & palettes: Stripes, damask, plaid, toile; colors like deep greens, navy, burgundy, combined with soft neutrals (cream, beige, taupe).
- Architectural detail: Moldings, crown moldings, paneling, woodwork, built-ins.
